Update with Spring 2010 DeCal

This is just a quick update on the Spring 2010 Entrepreneurship DeCal. All students who have e-mailed me expressing interest in the class have already been added to the mailing list and have recieved an e-mail with the information contained in this post.

I hope all of you are having a great winter break. Thank you for expressing interest in taking The Entrepreneurship DeCal next semester. The class will probably start a few weeks into next semester and we are still working with the scheduler to figure out a day and time. We’ll let you all know as soon as we know. When we do get assigned a classroom, all students will get a CEC (a unique code for every student) they can use on Telebears to sign up for the class.

If you have not already done so, please send an e-mail to amahesh [at] berkeley.edu expressing your interest in taking this course. Please list your current year in the e-mail. This way you will be added to our mailing list and will recieve the most up to date information.

Susan Hollingshead of B Lab will moderate a panel with three social enterprises focused on the topic of “ongoing social impact monitoring.” The social enterprises will discuss some of the challenges of measuring social impact on an ongoing basis, and how their thinking around this may have evolved from the initial business plan development. This session will focus on the reality of tracking social impact in the field, rather than as a theoretical exercise.

On December 5th, Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, will be at UC Berkeley to “describe the history and global impact of Wikipedia and share his perspectives on current and future trends on the Internet”. I have pasted the press release announcing the event, as well as the details below.

Jimmy Wales is an American Internet entrepreneur best known for founding the Wikimedia Foundation, the charity which operates Wikipedia.org, and the company Wikia, Inc., which operates Wikia.com. Wales received his Bachelor’s degree in finance from Auburn University and his Master’s in finance from University of Alabama. He was appointed a fellow of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School in 2005 and in 2006, he joined the Board of Directors of the non-profit organization Creative Commons. In January of 2001, Wales started Wikipedia.org, the online encyclopedia that anyone can edit and today Wikipedia and its sister projects are among the top-five most visited sites on the web (comScore, January 2009). In mid-2003, Wales set up the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization to support Wikipedia.org. The Foundation, now based in downtown San Francisco, has a staff of close to thirty focusing on fundraising, technology, and programming relating to the expansion of Wikipedia. Wales now sits on the board of trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation, and as founder continues to act as a key spokesperson. In 2004, Wales co-founded Wikia, Inc., a for-profit company that enables groups of people to share information and opinions that fall outside the scope of an encyclopedia. In 2007, The World Economic Forum recognized Wales as one of the “Young Global Leaders.” In addition, Wales received the “Time 100 Award” in 2006, as he was named one of the world’s most influential people in the “Scientists & Thinkers” category.

This event is part of the Entrepreneurial Best Practices Series put on by the Lester Center at the Haas school of business:

This session will provide practical insight into how to write a winning business plan, as well as provide both a VC’s and an entrepreneur’s perspective on business plans. The presentation will address the nuts and bolts detail of what is important in a plan. UC Berkeley BPlan Mixer Review

The UC Berkeley Business Plan mixer event was held last night in Soda Hall and the event had a good turnout with over 100 entreprenuers and engineers in attendance. About 30 or so students in our DeCal attended as well.

The event was really geared towards networking. It started with a introduction of the competition in the prizes, followed by a series of speeches from previous winners and others who had partaken in the competition.

The event concluded with a networking session where attendees mingled and discussed ideas and potential entrants into the competition. If you are interested in testing out your idea for a chance at possible seed money, the competition is a great way to do so. I know for a fact that this year they are trying to have more undergraduate entrees.
